#3366ff;\"><b>Eersterust<\/b> <\/span>or &#8220;First Rest&#8221;, often incorrectly spelled &#8220;Eersterus&#8221;, is a formal South African <a title=\"Township (South Africa)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Township_(South_Africa)\">township<\/a> located within the\u00a0<a title=\"City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/City_of_Tshwane_Metropolitan_Municipality\">City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality<\/a> and is located just about 15\u00a0km east of the <a title=\"Pretoria\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pretoria\">Pretoria<\/a> city centre. It is also referred to by locals as &#8220;Poort&#8221;. It was laid out in 1962 on the farm Vlakfontein. The name of Eersterust is clouded in mystery. Some say it is named after the mail-coach route that went to <a title=\"Lydenburg\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lydenburg\">Lydenburg<\/a> during the gold rush\u2014this being the first stop\u2014while others speculate that it might have been the first township for coloured people established in the area.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"csColumnGap\" style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; float: left; width: 3.23%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.eersterust.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/advanced-wp-columns\/assets\/js\/plugins\/views\/img\/1x1-pixel.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"csColumn\" style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; float: left; width: 45.8%;\" data-csstartpoint=\"510\" data-csendpoint=\"950\" data-cswidth=\"45.8%\" data-csid=\"4968e126-f7ba-bbd7-ba9b-f3d38cbefd48\">\n<h2><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><span id=\"Overview\" class=\"mw-headline\">Overview<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Eersterust is seen as the gateway to the industrial areas of Pretoria, like Silverton and Waltloo. Most of the residents work in these areas, not far from home. The township has an estimated 400,000 residents. This community has evolved to develop its own cultural history including unique traditions and a way of life, based on friendliness and hospitality. Restaurants offer a unique local flavour with a variety of choices available, from traditional tastes to the spicy and adventurous. The main language is <a title=\"Afrikaans\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Afrikaans\">Afrikaans<\/a> but many others are spoken.<\/div>\n<div>Eersterust is a very religious community, and there are numerous places of worship throughout the area. The first Catholic church which dates back to the early 1950s is located here. 60% of residents are <a title=\"Christianity\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christianity\">Christian<\/a>, while 30% belong to other religions, including <a title=\"Islam\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islam\">Islam<\/a>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"csColumnGap\" style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; float: left; width: 1.04%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.eersterust.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/advanced-wp-columns\/assets\/js\/plugins\/views\/img\/1x1-pixel.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; float: none; display: block; visibility: hidden; width: 0px; font-size: 0px; line-height: 0;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Neighborhoods<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Eersterust has six independent extensions which offer nearby schooling and transport routes. Many people have also gathered to fight crime by starting neighborhood night watch groups to assist the police in protecting their homes and streets. Local residents cleverly know their respective areas of Eersterust and its popular streets, namely <a title=\"Hans Coverdale Road\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hans_Coverdale_Road\">Hans Coverdale Road<\/a> West, <a title=\"Hans Coverdale Road\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hans_Coverdale_Road\">Hans Coverdale Road<\/a> East and <a title=\"Hans Coverdale Road\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hans_Coverdale_Road\">Hans Coverdale Road<\/a> North, these streets all begin with the name Hans Coverdale, and being long distanced allowing locals to enjoy easy navigation around the area. The naming of these respective areas are listed by its different extensions, namely ext.2, ext.3, ext.4, ext.5 and ext.6, each one of them playing a huge role in the township of Eersterust.
